De'Corey

Kitty and De’Corey

Kitty, the T-rex, was 9 months old and he lived with De’Corey.   In a house that De’Corey built.  Shhh, Kitty has a secret.   He hates De’Corey, but like me.  De’Corey plays basketball well.  Kitty plays with a little plays with a little basketball hoop.  De’Corey is really good at it.  Kitty never likes tag, tag is for babies.  He has a bad habit, farting too much.

Kitty has a friend. His friend is a dog.  He lives next door.  One day the dog missing.  Kitty knows he likes trees.  He looks in the trees but the dog is not there.  He looks by the dead spiders.  That’s where he found the dog hiding.  He was playing hide-and-go-seek.  He felt happy that he found him.

Marquis

One day MarQuis and ChaQuinn went to the desert. They also took their dog Sasha. Sasha’s color is black and tan.

They were hiking in the dry desert. We see cactus that are green and not that many.

After a while we got thirsty. We stopped and got snacks and water. I see a snake. It’s green. Its tongue is like a fork the color is brown.

The snake is rattling. It’s tired and slithering to a cactus to have some shade.

Sasha runs after the snake. It sees it from the corner of its eye. It turns its head, opens its mouth, gets a little bit closer, closes its mouth on Sasha’s neck. Now Sasha is very hurt.

ChaQuinn is worried that Sasha is not going to be okay. Sometimes Sasha will start twitching.

I tried to catch the snake. Then it bit me. Ouch! “Are you okay?” ChaQuinn asked. Then she dragged me the whole way.

Finally we seen a guy. ChaQuinn asked “Can I get some water?” Then he drove off. I woke up but I couldn’t walk so I crawled.

Finally a helicopter saw us. They dropped the ladder. When we got up we got water. They took me and Sasha to the doctors to get cured. After we got cured we never went to the desert again.

(3rd grade only) On Parade Day, please send a lunch in a totally disposable container as we have no way to transport lunchboxes back.

Also please remember you need to pick your child up or have made arrangements to have them picked up at the flagpole at Grant High School at about 2:00 on parade day. We are marching group number 49 in the parade.

Homework: There is no homework this week.

Reading: Students are continuing to read their own books and keep a response journal during reading. We are also continuing our read out loud.

If you child is wondering about what book to read next, I recommend using this website: http://www.whatshouldireadnext.com/ You can type in the name of a book that your child enjoys and then find other books that might also be of interest.

Science: This week we learned more about seed germination. Students discovered that sometimes old seeds, past their expiration date, do not germinate. They also worked on planting a pumpkin patch in the garden for next year.

For animal life cycles, we studied the life cycle of frogs. Students learned about the four stages of a frog’s life cycle and wrote about their learnings.

Writing: The imaginative writings were wonderful! Keep an eye on the blog for the next few days. I’ll be posting the stories as soon as they are typed. Students are also working on poems for spring. They used dictionaries to find interesting words about spring and are finishing up their final drafts this week!

In the last week of school, we will be creating a writing portfolio for each student to take home. This will have many of the essays and stories they have worked on throughout the year.

“Street”
I like the street I live in and the people in my street. There are nice people in my street. There are lots of kids in my street.
In my street there are nice people. They are nice, because when we moved in they introduced themselves. One family made cookies for us. Across the street, a neighbor plays basketball with my brother.

In my street, there are lots of kids. I have met some of them, though we don’t play with them very often. One girl goes to Sabin. She is a first grader in Mrs. Mode’s class.

“Bull Run Watershed”
On the way there I saw Douglas Fir Trees. I also saw ferns. I learned that there was a Bull Run war. Another thing I learned was that the Sandy River connects into the Bull Run River. I loved the tour bus ride there.
At the damn I learned how the pipes work. I also learned that the dam is 194 feet high. Another thing I learned was how to clean the Bull Run River. One more thing I learned was that the Oregon tree is the Douglas Fir.

On the way to the hut I felt a tree and it felt moist and hard. I also felt moss and it was soft and cozy. I felt clover and it was wet. One last thing is I learned was that the forest is important to keep the Bull Run River working.

“The Adventure of Ripjaw"

 Afton
Ripjaw is a selfish half-shark half-man, but wont’ admit it. He lives in a dark cave beneath the waves where the walls have collapsed around the entrance. There’s a crevice that he can slip through in time of need- which can include evil deeds or good ones depending on his level boredom.
Lately he’s been trying to get his braces off. Sometimes his intelligence is used for bad things . In this way, Ripjaw attempts to remove the braces with his fins, but they are so slimy that he can’t get a grip. Ripjaw was disgusted with himself and frustrated to no end. He takes his anger out by ripping doll’s heads off. This makes sense because he has to fulfill the first part of his name. Ironically, he is nicknamed, “Jaws”
After ripping the heads of several dolls, Ripjaw tries to get his braces off yet again. He gets the brilliant idea to ask Mr. Magic’s underwater submarine. When he arrived, Mr. Magic was waiting at the helm.
“Hello, I have been expecting you, Ripjaw,” Mr. Magic said.
“Please, call me ‘Jaws’ . Where’s the potion?”
        “Right here,” Mr. Magic said.
Then he pulled the potion out from beneath his waistcoat.
“Drink it slowly or you will lose your teeth,” Mr. Magic warned.
“Yeah, yeah,” Ripjaw replied knowing full well that he’d do what ever it took to get those braces off.
So he went back to his cave and drank the potion, but he drank it too fast and lost all of his teeth—However, sharks do after grow a new set when they need one. So all was not lost for Ripjaw.

To be or not to be continued...

“The Bird”
Once there was a bird that lived in a hollow tree. It was nice but lived next to ogres, the ogres loved eating birds. The bird’s heads were saved for dessert. But the bird was great in hiding.
The bird was a humming bird and loved honey especially. The humming bird loved hiding because she loved acting like a spy. She loved here friends, Blue bird and red eyed Booby bird but sometimes  they fought. The loved eating buttered biscuits together.
They have a friend butterfly, snails, chipmunk and squirrel. Their favorite things to do with each other was to play hide and seek, tag and pin the ogre! They loved the night and the moon.

“The End”

Two of my favorite subjects are Math and Science. Math is fun because you can always check your answer in a addition or subtraction. In Science its fun because you can learn about different life cycles.
Math is fun because you can check your answer in addition or subtraction. My math teacher is Ms. Kenny. In my math class there are thirty six kids. Math starts at ten thirty Monday through Thursday and my math partners were together with me to solve the problem.

In Science it’s fun because you can learn about life cycles. In Science we learn about human and animal life cycles. I little to discover new life cycles. Come and join me everyday in Ms. Luria’s classroom.

On Wednesday I had a photo shoot at the mall. I had o have two pair of clothes. I got to bring props
It was fun because I got to wear sunglasses. I wore orange shorts. The light was bright.

I had on a blue plain t-shirt. After school I went straight to the photo shoot. I was happy because I like photo shoots.

“Beach Trip”
I went to the beach last Friday. I saw lots of bald eagles there. There was a tepee made out of logs there. I found a bald eagle feather there, it was brown. I liked that day because I like the beach.

The beach was very fun. It was very rainy at the beach. I saw lots of fishermen there. The name of the town was Capemeer. I had a very fun time at the beach.

Lily

I got a new dog. My soccer friends named him Timothy. He is black and brown. I think he is palmerain with a mix of king cavalier. He is a small dog.
Timothy hardly makes noise. He is very nice. He likes getting brushed in the chest. He is very funny. Once he spent the whole day while we were gone dogging the toilet with the newspaper.
He is afraid of dog toys, especially squeaky one. We finally found one he likes. He loves my bed. He also really likes having his tummy rubbed. I really love him because he is very sweet.

“Bears”
My two favorite bears are black bears and Polar bears. Black bears are found in the wide range of northern Canada and Alaska to Mexico, but they’re in Portland too because they’re at the zoo. Polar bears live i the Artic, though they may live somewhere else.
Black bears are here in Portland because they live in the zoo, but they really live in the range of northern Canada and Alaska to Mexico. Black bears cubs leave the den with their mother for 12 to 18 months after they’re born. Black bears are shy animals.

Polar bears may live somewhere else, though mostly they live in the Arctic. Polar bears skin is black. Polar bears can smell a seal under 6 feet of snow.

Elliana

Rosie is a smart dog. She protects our house. She wakes us up. She always bites our feet, I love here.
She protects our house. She is a good protector because she bites. Sometimes she can’t protect because she’s in her cage. I am very lucky.

She wakes us up by biting us. I love when she wakes us up. She jumps up in the morning too. I love when she licks me.

If your child would like to perform, they need to be ready for a try out on Wednesday after lunch. There is a time limit of 2 minutes per act. Students can be in one piece.

Classroom need: We could use more pencils. The best pencils (that don't break every 5 minutes) are the Ticondera pencils. Thanks! Also, we could use some more hand held pencil sharpeners.

Homework: This week is the last week for homework. This last homework is completing their
final draft.

Reading: We have started a new read out loud book as a class. We are reading The New Kid at School.  Students are enjoying the book! It is a great series that you can check out at the local library as well! (Students can no longer check out books at school for the remainder of the year.)  If your child likes books about dragons, here are some other books the local library has: link

Students are also having some choice reading time daily. Students are keeping a journal as they read their own book and working on the skills of predicting and summarizing as they read.

Science: We compared the life cycles of humans and chickens this week. Students were surprised to learn that there are a lot of similarities between the life cycles. Students also wrote about the life cycles and drew one life cycle this week. Next week we will continue to study more life cycles.

Here is a link to the life cycle of kangaroos. Talk with your child about how they are similar or different from the life cycles of humans and plants! Link

Also, we planted some different seeds. Students are keeping the seeds at school to watch the germination process. They planted three different seeds and will be observing them to see which seeds will germinate the fastest and the slowest.

Writing: We are finishing our imaginative writing unit! Students have worked very hard on coming up with a plot that makes sense, adding in dialogue and descriptions to their stories. We also talked about slowing down the action to make a story more interesting. This week students should be finishing up their final drafts by Thursday.

Make sure your child checks their name on the blog. Many of them have comments about their writing!

Evan - 3rd grade work sample

I am an expert at minecraft. Mine craft is a video game. You can play on computers, mobile devices, and on the Xbox. The point is to kill the ender dragon and build whatever you want. The ender dragon is a big purple dragon. When I build cool stuff in mincraft I feel awesome.
Mine craft was released May 17, 2009. Marcus Perrson, Jens Bergens Stem and Nathan Adams created minecraft. Markus Perresons nickname is notch, Jens Bergens Stems nickname is Je B, and Nathan Adams nickname is dinner bone. (Skipped) now makes new updates for minecraft. I admire notch most.

Are you wondering what minecraft is? Minecraft is a video game, Minecraft is on PC, Mac, Xbox, phone Ras bary Pi, and tablet. The version of minecraft started at the original and its now 1.4.7. Minecraft goes on a lot of things.

The following is how you play minecraft. In minecraft everything is a mud out or 3d blocks. You also find resources to build your house and crafts stuff. I craft weapons to kill monsters. I also craft tools to gather resources fast and mine faster. The point of minecraft is to kill the ender dragon. The mobs are monsters, animals and humans. Minecraft is my favorite game.

The following is why I am an expert. I am an expert on Minecraft because I know everything you can craft with iron, diamonds, gold, stone, flint, wood, sticks, wooden planks, leather and sand. I am also an expert on Minecraft because I know that notch created it using java. The last reason I think I’m an expert is I know the point of Minecraft is to kill the ender dragon. I’ve never killed the ender dragon.

When I first played minecraft I hardly knew anything about it. I learned to play Minecraft by playing it, talking about it with (skipped), and watching YouTube videos, (skipped) like Minecraft too. When I build cool stuff in Minecraft I feel really excited. Minecraft is the best game I’ve ever played.

“Soccer”

I got involved by playing soccer with my friend, Jarred. Then it got bigger, my mom signed me up for practice. The team was involved with the Timbers. It took me a month but I finally mastered that level of soccer. I enjoyed my coach.

In soccer you have to have to make a goal for whatever team you’re playing for. You cannot use your hands. When you are going for the goal you must dribble. You can use tricks to help get around other players. I think sometimes these instructions can be hard.

The soccer equipment you need is soccer shoes and long socks. You need big shorts so you can move around better. You need protective shin pads. And you need a large T-shirt. This equipment is good for soccer.

I look up to the Timbers. They are the Portland soccer team. They wear the color green. They work hard to win. They are good players.

After practice I would go to get ice cream. I would also go to the hotcake and steak house. When I go to sleep that night I would sleep well. The next day I would be refreshed. That’s part of why I liked practice.

I moved up to the next level “modern hotshot”. That was the 2nd level in my coach’s mind. And by then I thought of myself a pretty darn good player. Now I’m considered a VIP MVP whatever you would call me but I was every single darn thing but bad. I love being the best of the best.

Two farm animals are pigs and horses. Pigs are good pets. Horses are fun to ride on. A good pet is a pig. Potbellied pig is the best kind of pig for a family pet. That is because they are very social.

Something fun to ride on is a horse. My cousin is taking lessons, she goes to a riding arena, but personally I’d rather have a pig!

“Authors”

My favorite authors are Scott O’Dell and Beverly Cleary. Scot O’Dell writes back mostly about India. Beverly Cleary writes books about kids mostly.

Indians are mostly what Scott O’Dell writes about. Scott O’Dell wrote: a novel of Sacguiga,  Island of the blue dolphins. Thunder rolling in the mountains, My name is not Angelica, Zia and Carlota. I plan to read all or Sean O’Dell’s books!

Beverly Cleary writes mostly about kids. Beverly Cleary wrote: Romana (6 books). Hennery (6 or 7 books), Ralph (3 books), and much more. Beverly Cleary’s books are interesting, funny, detailed and I can relate to everything because she writes about kids and I’m a kid. Beverly Cleary lived on my block I live and know when she was a kid.

The music that I like is Bruno Mars because I like the song called when I was your man. The other song that I like is psy gentleman because it is funny.

I like the music of Bruno mars because I like the song called When I was your man. I like how he sings the song because he has a great voice. He has good voice and I like the song.

The other song that I like is psy gentleman because it is funny. And he gets stuck at the alter. I like it because it is funny and because I like how they sing the song and the moves how they dance.

Singing is really peaceful to my heart. Singing comes from your heart. It does not come from your lungs. You just practice to get the song. I love learning to sing.

Singing comes from your heart. Your heart is a special gift. Gift so it gives out good luck. The special gift to sing is your heart. I love my heart because it gives out a special gift.

Singing does not come from your lungs. Singing comes from your heart and it comes from your love. You can write a song about anything. I love singing because it is like rapping.

Singing comes from your heart and your heart is good. You just have to practice and practice. You can write and talk about singing. I love learning all about singing.

Violet - 2nd grade work sample

“Soccer”

I like to play soccer. I am an expert at playing soccer. I started playing soccer at the beginning of first grade. There are special instructions special to play the sport. After the game we do things like cheer for the other team.

The first time I played soccer, I really like it. Our team is called Galaxy. One of my friend’s moms taught about starting a soccer team in first grade. I have lots of members on my team. Each time we play, we play harder teams.

Of course you need rules to play soccer. One of the first rules is that everyone needs to have cleats and shin guards. You also need to be wearing a team uniform. You can’t push people while you are playing. Another rule is you can only touch the ball with your feet. You’re trying to get the ball into the goal. You really need to pass if you want to get the ball inside the goal. Make sure your also running. You have to toy hard. That is how you play soccer.

I am an expert at soccer because I’ve been playing for two years. I always try my best to get a goal. I am very good at keeping control of the ball. I follow all the rules of the team. When I grow up I hope to be on the Olympic soccer team.

Rakyah - 2nd grade work sample

My name is Rakyah, I’m an expert on gymnastics. I started doing gymnastics when I was 2 years old. I learned all the easy stuff like cartwheels, hand stand, kick overs and front flips/tucks when I was 4. Now I’m doing back hand springs, back tuck and cartwheels with no hand. I also like teaching. I teach Naime’s brother Nasir.

I love doing it on trampolines. That’s how I learned how to do back hand spring, and back tucks. Also my dad and god sisters taught me how. That’s why I like going over there. They must like teaching me so I can get better.

I’ve been trying to do back tucks for a very long time. Same as back hand springs. I run up the wall and fall to my feet. I teach my sister, brother and cousins. But they never listen, my brothers do they want to learn.

You will need some mats, sweats/ jump suit. Also some running space like a gym. I do this because it’s my favorite thing to do. I learned by doing it on grass at parks. People say I’m a risk taker because I try new gymnastics moves.

When Maggie got lost - By Natalia

When the Puppy of Love got Lost

Maggie is a little, black stuffed animal. She is no bigger than a shoebox!

She lived in Natalia’s and Mateo’s bedroom. She also lived with Rosa and their Mommy and Mama. Maggie is Mateo’s special stuffed animal. She also loves Natalia very much. She loves Natalia, “one hundred million eighty thousand!” That’s a lot!

Maggie was excited that it was springtime in Portland. She was going to the spring fair with Mateo, Natalia and Rosa. At the spring festival they were all playing and waiting by a flowerbed. Natalia was carrying Maggie. Accidentally, Natalia dropped Maggie!

“Woof, woof!” said Maggie.

No one heard her.

Maggie tried to stand up, but she couldn’t. Natalia and Mateo didn’t see her. They wandered off to watch a parade. Actually, Mateo was in the parade!

After the parade, they noticed Maggie was missing!

“Maggie is gone!”

They walked back to the flowerbed. What did they see? They saw something black. Who was it? It was Maggie!

Natalia picked her up and hugged her. “I love you so much. I love you one hundred million eighty thousand.” Maggie felt good, good, good. Very good!

She hugged Natalia. “I love you mama, mama, mommy.”

Then they all went back home. Even Maggie! And they never got lost again!

The Scared Ghost - A story for you to finish!

The Scared Ghost

A long time ago, in the rainforest lived a ghost. There was also a t-rex living in the rainforest. The ghost was the t-rex’s neighbor. The ghost lived in a big wall of stones. It felt safe in its stone wall, but it was really scared of the t-rex.

Whenever he saw the t-rex he would turn ghostly pale. That’s more pale than even a ghost normally is. He would turn so pale he would become visible! (Ghosts are normally invisible.)

The t-rex lived in a mansion made out of trees and sticks. He was really strong and created the mansion himself. He didn’t know that an invisible, friendly ghost lived next to him.

One day the ghost decided to try to talk to the T-rex. The invisible ghost went to find the t-rex, but the t-rex was not in his mansion. He was hunting for food.

The ghost walked into the t-rex’s mansion. His invisible heart almost left his chest, he was so nervous. He glides into the toothium. In case you don’t know, t-rex’s have a LOT of teeth. They spend an immense amount of time cleaning their teeth. Unlike you and me, they have a whole room devoted to teeth cleaning, called a toothium.

What does he see in this room? He comes face to face with a model t-rex mouth with real teeth. “Ahh” screams the ghost. He is so scared, he become visible.

Who should walk in at that moment, but the real t-rex. This is no model! It had claw like short arms and massive jaws that opened and shut. “Snap, snap, snap!”

"Who are you?" screamed the t-rex. "How dare you come in my house! Especially my toothium." Even though the t-rex was putting on a big show of being mad, he was actually quite frightened.

The ghost, of course, was visible pale. It ran out of the toothium and right through its stone wall. The t-rex followed him to try and chase him away.

He  ran into the wall of the house. "Owch that hurts. Where is that ghost?"

The ghost came out and said, "can we talked together?" And they talked. And they talked. As it turned out, they decided to become friends and they both lived as neighbors happily ever after!
