Dear Families,

Thank you for a fantastic Bridges Tour this week. We learned so much about bridges and had a wonderful time walking all over. I couldn't have done it without your support and all of the volunteers that came along on the walk. Thank you!

We are making cuttings of some violets in the classroom. They spent a long time rooting in water. Students then learned about different diseases that affect African Violets. Now, they are all potted up and we are observing their growth.

In gardening class, we harvested our radishes. Students also continue to observe their pea plants and update their science journal every week with their plants growth. This is a great opportunity to practice making predictions, measuring in centimeters, and learning more about the life cycle of plants

We continue to watch our Praying Mantis. Hopefully they will hatch before the end of the school year!

As an art connection to our IB unit on bridges, students made prints of different bridges. They are all hanging up in the classroom, but should come home soon. Students learned about the different between an original and a print. First they created an original, which was copied, and then students made a print. This is an important art concept - the different between an original and a print!

Students finished their timelines of Portland History. They are all scrolls that are rolled around a pencil. Some students have some finishing touches to do at home! Students learned about the history of our city from before it was Portland through the present!

Thank you for coming to Global Experience night. We enjoyed sharing our musical instruments with you! It was a wonderful night and students were excited to have you attend! In preparation for the night we also learned about Guatemala, made Guatemala flags and watched the video Living On One Dollar.

Students also learned more about micro-finance and I helped students make three loans through Kiva.org. Ask your child about who we lent money to and what they are going to be doing with the money! (It was my money that was lent FYI).

Have a wonderful 3 day weekend!

Bridge Tour and homework due 5/22

Homework due 5/22

Dear Families,

We are all very excited for our bridge tour that will be happening on Tuesday. Here is some information from the tour organizer:

I will begin the tour with a discussion of Portland's history as it relates to bridges. We will plan to walk over the Broadway Bridge, and then stop at Union Station for a snack and rest room break. We will continue, walking over the Union Station Pedestrian Bridge to McCormick Pier and then we will discuss the Steel Bridge, before walking over the lower level.

We will plan to have lunch on the Eastbank Esplanade, and then we'll travel along the Esplansade to OMSI for a rest room break. From there, we will be able to see the Tilikum Crossing, Ross Island and Marquam Bridges. We will return to the west side via the Hawthorne Bridge. I will then lead the students to Bus 17. They will see "Portlandia" before heading back.
It should be a fun and informative day.

As a reminder, please arrive at 8:15 am so we can get to Bus 17 and leave by 8:25!

Chester went for a hike in the woods. He smiled. Everything was so peaceful and the sunlight streamed through the branches of the birch trees.just felt like running but his backpack quickly stopped him from that.his back hadn't matches and magnifying glass how old rope plus a pack of gum drops. Chester is overloaded with utensils anything would happen. Chester's father had took care of that.
"you have to be prepared my lad" patting Chester's shoulder have to be prepared."

Chester shook his head and focused on the trail ahead. Well there wasn't a trail. There was a log bridge crossing the streams that was too large to jump. Chester took a deep breath and stared hard at the bridge. Chester wasn't afraid of the bridge for you to watch plenty of movies where bridges fall and people die.  He didn't want that happening to him. God! he told himself. I am 15 and I'm scared of walking across a bridge. Chester took a deep breath and started across the bridge. Snap!!! The bridge Snapped  and Chester plunged into the water. Chester did a powerful backstroke to avoid getting hit by falling logs. He climbed to the other side of the shore and said,"that water is cold I am freezing!"

He said his backpack by a tree and started collecting logs of wood. He started arranging them in a fire worthy pile. "I think I can start a fire" he said as he opened a box of matches. He scraped and match across the box and a small flame burst to life.he set the logs on  fire with the match. He got a magnifying glass and set it in a position where the sun shone into it. "This will make the fire bigger" said Chester.

When he was done with making the fire bigger he tied a rope above the fire suspended by to tree trunks. He took off his clothes and hanged them on the rope above the fire. "that will dry them" he said. He quickly put the towel on him to cover up himself so nobody would see him. Chester smiled. His father was right! You do have to be prepared when you go hiking!

One day, Josh went for a hike. He was going camping for seven days. Josh went camping a lot. There was a rickety old wooden bridge that he had to cross to get into the campground. Josh was always prepared for emergencies. He had a rope, a towel, matches, and a magnifying glass to study insects wings. He saw the rickety bridge in the distance.

When Josh got to the bridge, he paused. It didn't look as sturdy as it used to be. But Josh started crossing anyways. When he was about in the middle, the bridge collapsed. Just fell into the stream. He got soaked.

Josh said, "That water is cold. I am freezing."

Josh had to dry off his clothes. He started collecting twigs and dried leaves to start a fire.

After Josh gathered the branches, he took out his magnifying glass and rope. He tied the rope to two different trees and hung his wet clothes there. He started a fire by aiming the sunlight through the magnifying glass and straight at the twigs and dried leaves. They started to catch on fire. In the end, Josh ended up going home because he had forgotten his tent.

Stewart was driving to the store to buy a cake for his grandma’s birthday party. He was going to get a chocolate cake with strawberry frosting. He could see the store ahead.

He walked into the store. “I would like a chocolate cake with strawberry frosting,” he said. The store clerk handed him the cake. As Stewart  walked out of the store, he was tempted to eat it.

Stewart was back in the car. He placed the cake on top of his head as he drove away. (He wasn’t very smart.) Stewart opened the window for some fresh air. A family of elk emerged from the bushes. Stewart reached for his camera. The cake slipped, it fell. It tumbled out of the window.

“Oh nooo,” yelled Stewart. He swerved towards the cake. The cake rolled in the water. Stewart followed. He landed in the water with a loud splash.

“I’m having a very bad day,” thought Stewart “Please, someone come and help me!” he yelled to the trees. He yelled and yelled and yelled. Soon he discovered yelling was useless and quit. Somehow he got ahold of his phone. He tried to turn it on. If he was frowning before, he was really frowning now. The only thing that happened when he pushed the power button was a random wire poking out from the bottom.
“My phone broke!” he wailed. Finally coming to his senses,
he was paddling his car towards the road with the broken window. Suddenly a strong current sent him floating back into the middle of the Columbia river. Just then Stewart had a great idea. In fact, it was the best idea he ever had. Unless you count the time he used an actual bike-pump to put air in his flat tire. He usually just put his mouth on it and blew. But that is another story. Anyways, his idea involved fireworks, lots and lots of fireworks. He just happened to have some with him. He arranged them in a way that clearly said HELP.

A forest ranger was sure to see it. Stewart carefully took out his only match and flicked it against the match box. A small orange flame appeared. Very, very carefully he lit the blue fireworks. They exploded in the air with a loud BOOM!!!
About fifteen minutes later, Stewart saw a green and brown truck pulling up. A young man dressed in all green and brown camouflage stepped out.

“I’m over here!!” yelled Stewart.

The forest ranger said, “I saw your message, so what’s going on here?”

“Um, isn’t it obvious?” asked Stewart impatiently. “I’m stuck in this river!”

“I’m afraid that by myself, I will not be able to help you. But, I can get some of my friends to help me, if you could wait a few minutes,” said the forest ranger.

Forty-five minutes later, the ranger returned with a whole rescue team. One of the ranger carried a long rope. The guy with the rope walked over to the side of the river. He threw the rope to Stewart.

“Grab on,” he said. Stewart tried to swim closer to the rope. When he was just a few inches away, when the current sent him flying in the other direction. On his eight-hundred and fifty-seventh try, he reached the rope. The other forest grabbed the rope’s end, and pulled. They tugged, Stewart was just too heavy. Then the rangers got smart. They tied the rope to three different jeeps.

One got into each of the jeeps and started to move forward. Stewart felt himself being pulled out of the river. Stewart was so happy that when he got out, he started dancing around.

"Thank you so much for saving me ," he said.

"You're  very welcome," replied one of the Rangers. Then Stewart had a horrible thought. His car was still in the water!

"What about my car?" be asked.

"What about it?" Send one of the Rangers.

"Will you able will you be able to get out of the river?" asked Stewart.

"I'm sorry, but we can't do that," said a Ranger.

"I can help you pay for it," said another ranger.

"Pay for what?" Asked Stewart.

"Your new car," City Ranger.

Stewart couldn't believe that he had to get a new car. With $30 from each of the seven Rangers he headed to the car shop

The cars shop had a whole section of blue cars. He picked a $1000 blue and red Subaru. Stewart loved his new car. He had it for many years.

Robert was nineteen year old boy, who had borrowed his dad’s jeep, was driving it next to a small river.

He was going fast because he was late for a camping trip with his friends Ana and Max.
He was wearing his favorite pink hat that had a moose on it.

As he was driving, he didn’t see the sign that said, “Watch out! Deer Crossing! Right Now! Look! At that moment Robert turned to see that a deer and a doe had bounced out of the forest and onto the road.

Robert quickly swerved. His pink hat went flying. His jeep slipped on a river rock and fell in a deep river.

Robert screamed, “Help!!! Heeelllppp!!!!”

Robert heard a truck down the road. “I hope they can help!” Robert thought.

Luckily Katherine, the forest ranger who had helped Robert out of Salmon river a few months ago, was patrolling the forest. She heard Roberts cries and thought, “That sounds like the guy a who I had to get out of three rivers.”

So she drove towards the sound.

Meanwhile Robert was sinking.

Robert climbed to the front of the jeep and tried to jump to the road but it was to far.

Thankfully katherine came in her truck as soon as Robert was starting to sink.
She quickly grabbed a rope from her truck and threw it to him. Katherine pulled him out of the jeep in the river.

She tied another rope to her truck and the jeep. She got in her truck and pulled the jeep out.

She jumped out of the truck and walked over to Robert. katherine said, “How in the world did you fall into THAT river!!”

Robert ignored her question and exclaimed, “You saved me... again.!!”
Katherine said, “I’ll drive you home, ok.

Robert said, “Sure.”

Katherine drove Robert home.

Once their was a girl that was left alone in her room because her parents had to take a important phone call. The girl looked around for something to brake. She found a closet. “AHHH.” The girl found a big green squishy stuffed monster in her closet. After she went in her closet it was just her teddy bear with her baby sister holding it. Her baby sister looked at the girl like she didn’t know what was going on. Two hours later she forgot about her baby sister in the closet with her teddy bear.  So the girl made marks on the wall. She threw CDs. She tore papers out of a book. The door opened fast, “What did you do?” Said the parents. “ You messed up the room!”
“I didn’t do it.” Said the girl.
“CLEAN UP.” Yelled the parents.
The girl cleaned the floor and put the CDs back on the table.
“Thank you.” said the parents “Now you get a treat.”
“Treat.” said the girl. The girl realy liked the treat.
“Now say thank you.” said the parents.
“Thank you.” said the girl.
Then they all wanted to listen to a CD that the girl broke.
She wrote a note to her mom and dad to say sorry.

The note said : Sorry mom and dad for messing up the room. I LOVE YOU

“Aw, thats is so cute.” said the parents. The girl never got yelled at again.

Roger was going on his daily Saturday ride next to the river. He was sixteen so he had just got his driver’s licence. He was starting to turn. But just when he thought he had it under control, two golden brown deer bounded out of the forest and on to the gravelly road.

Roger said, “I can’t hit them deer!” He swerved into the river. Roger said, “Oh no!” The jeep slid into the water. Roger thought,”My phone!” Fortunately, it was still in his pocket. He said, “Ranger, I’m in the Columbia river, Forest Greenwood, Toe Street, help me!” Someone answered.
“Be there thirty minutes later” Roger was glad.

A brown truck pulled up that said “Ranger”.
“Help, help, over here” said Roger. The ranger threw a rope to Roger. Roger held on tight. He was out of the water in no time.

The ranger said,”Your car looks fine but let’s get it out of the water.” Five minutes later, the jeep was out of the river and Roger was heading home after he thanked the ranger again.

Joe was 16 years old. He had just got his driver’s licences. He was driving his new jeep to see if it worked correctly. He was driving alongside a river when suddenly a deer bounded out of the forest and into the road. Joe swerved to avoid hitting the young perfect deer. Unfortunately, Joe’s jeep slid into the river! Joe was screaming for help.

Just out of coincidence a forest ranger was out on patrol about one mile away and heard his screaming. The forest ranger drove over to Joe and his jeep still stuck in the water. He had to act fast because the car was sinking like a boulder of a cliff. The forest ranger tied a rope to the back of his truck. He threw the rest of the rope to Joe. Joe tied the rope to the hood of his jeep. The forest ranger got in his car and started driving.  Joe and his jeep started lifting onto shore. Joe gave a wet handshake to the forest ranger and drove home to take a nice warm bath.

One day Roy was driving in his stagecoach. He was in the army. He was 16. He had just gotten his license for his horse because cars had not been invented yet.

Roy was going hunting near a river.  Suddenly a deer popped out of a nearby bush. Roy swerved to avoid the deer and his stagecoach and horse slid into the river! Even worse, the horse was drowning!

Roy screamed, “911! Is anybody here! I slid into the river!” Lucky for Roy, a forest ranger heard him screaming.

“I’m coming!” said the ranger. The ranger was by the river in five minutes with his stagecoach.

The ranger grabbed a rope from inside his stagecoach. He tied the rope to his horse.
“Tie the other end to your horse!” The ranger yelled as he threw the rope to Roy. Roy quickly tied the rope to his horse.

The ranger got on his stagecoach and yelled, “Giddy up horsey!” The horse started to go down the road and Roy started to get on the road!

Roy thanked the ranger and started driving his stagecoach home.

Britney was hungry when she came from work. Britney went to look in her refrigerator. Her brothers Max and Jim had hit the food she had just bought. "It's empty!" she cried. "Where is all the food I bought?"

Max and Jim carried the food away as they silently laughed at Brittany.

Britney went shopping for more food. She went to BE BOB BOSS Grocery Store. This is the best grocery store in the land. She bought steak, fish, honey smacks, noodles, vegetables, oatmeal, chicken, and candy. After Britney got home, she ate the steak, the oatmeal, and the vegetables.

"I'm glad I bought all of this food. I won't have to shop tomorrow, " she said as Max and Jim walked into the kitchen, but then they took the food away yet again!

Robert was a 16 year old that just got his license. He was driving next to the river in his new jeep to get a good view of the baby salmon that just hatched. He never knew they would be out this early! (Just telling you Robert loves salmon, not how they taste, and not their red color, he just love salmon for their unique name.)

Robert said “Oh salmon, you remind me of fall because of your color.” Robert loved salmon, he actually wanted to marry them. Robert looked back on the road, he saw something, it looked deer going away like they always do or ’s the other way, proceed. The deer or something else were getting closer to Robert, he really wanted to look.

Robert said in his head, “Don’t look don’t look Robert.” (but he looked.)

Robert said , “Ahhhhhhhhh!!!” Do you want to know why he said ahhh ( I’m guessing yes.) He said ahhh because he starting to slide down, down, down into the river (the Columbia or Willamette river I don’t either one, but I’m going with Columbia) Robert’s front wheels were going down the river a little slower but not that slow. Robert got his phone while he had the time and pressed the numbers 911 as fast as he could because his phone was at 4 % battery.

A man with a deep voice came to the phone and said, “May I help you sir?

Robert said , “Yes officer I’m stuck in the---.” That is when his phone died.

Robert said, “Can this day get any worse?” The day did get worse, his car was half way into the water but then it got better. A ranger truck was driving along and Robert must’ve seen it because he was yelling “HELP, HELP somebody HELP!!” HE screamed. The ranger saw Robert and he stopped his car as fast as he could.

He came out and got a rope from the trunk of the car.
He said, “Hold on fella I’ll get you out of there, How old are you sir.?”

Robert said, “16 ranger sir.”

The ranger said, “Oh, you don’t have to call me that call me Fred.”

Robert said, “Okay Fred.” The ranger, or Fred found a rope in the trunk and tossed it to Robert. Robert said, “Thank you Fred I didn’t think you could save me.”

The ranger said, “ Tie the rope onto the front of the Jeep young sir.”

Robert said, “Okay.” As soon as Robert was done with that the ranger tied the end of the rope to his truck and got in and turned the engine on. He put his foot on the gas pedal and  started going. As soon as the wheels were on the gravel the ranger said hop out. Robert was on the ground again he started climbing up the gravel and as soon as you could say “Robert was saved”,  he was up.

The ranger said, “Do you have a place to go sir, I mean Robert?”

Fred said, “Yes ranger sir, a camping site. The campsite is called The Camp Site.”

The ranger said, “I’m going to that campsite Robert I’m meeting a guys named Robert Bob.”

Robert said, “That’s me!”

The ranger said, “Well, we can carpool then.” Robert and the ranger drove off in the sunlight while laughing about each other’s jokes.

Robert Welsh was the number two businessman  in America. He made a thousand bucks a week. Robert had 6 mouths to feed. Golly!

One day he was driving to make a speech in Pittsburgh. He was driving through a nice, peaceful forest. Suddenly three deer came by. Robert didn’t know because he was texting his wife.

One deer crashed into the car. Robert looked up from his phone. Next thing he knew, deer antlers were where his window had been. Robert screamed. The deer pushed until Robert felt water all around him.

He stood up. his Jeep wobbled in the water.

“HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Robert shrieked louder than- well anything. But there were no cars coming.

Just then a car came by. Robert knew the person could help him. So without thinking, Robert threw his phone at the car.

The phone crashed into the side window of the car. Then Robert saw a big white thing where the window had been. Robert realized he had set off the airbags.

Well this is great, thought Robert. Water was up to his ankles now.

A man stepped out of the car. He was a forest ranger.

“What in god’s sake are you doin’!” The forest ranger looked indescribable. But before Robert could answer, the ranger was running to the back of his car.

“What do YOU think you’re doing?” Robert yelled at back. Water was up to his knees now.
Something long and white soared through the air. Robert grabbed it. It was a rope.

“I’m saving you!” The ranger hooked his end of the rope to the back of his car.

“Swim mister!” The ranger yelled at Robert. So Robert plunged into the icy cold water.

Robert soon felt the rough asphalt of the road. He ran to thank the ranger but before he could, the ranger punched him.

Robert woke up in a hospital.

Robert was a retired bus driver who liked to fish. He thought it was a perfect day for that.

He said, “Ah, what a beautiful day.” Robert had packed in his backpack, a water bottle, a bottle of sunscreen, a cold slice of pizza, and his brand new mermaid fishing hook! Robert thought it was a perfect day to fish, when a couple of deer bounded out of the forest. He said, “Ahhhhhh!” and swerved to the right. Robert heard the noise of water splashing and then his vision went black. He was wet. Robert thought nothing could get any worse, when a squirrel came and took his favorite hat. He must have crashed into the river that was next to the road.

When Robert woke up the first thing he saw was a river otter eating his worms for the fishing trip. Robert said, “Aaah! That was my only fish bait!” That scared the otter, and it ran away. With the worms. Robert picked up his iPhone 6 and dialed 911. He said, “Hi! I really need rescuing. I’m stuck in the Columbia river with my Jeep.”

“Alright. I will contact one of the rangers from that part of the forest. They’ll come soon enough.” Robert waited for hours before the forest ranger came. Robert thought, Finally! and then said, “Thank you so much!”

The forest ranger tipped his hat and said, “You're welcome.” He pulled a rope out of his ranger car and tossed it to Robert. Robert climbed the rope and got safely to the road. Then, the rope got tied to Robert’s Jeep and that got pulled out too. Robert thanked the ranger one last time and got into his soaking wet car. He drove safely to the lake he would fish at, and they all lived happily ever after.

Robert was a fellow that lived in the country. He was a farmer. He was a normal person. He wanted to sell a horse but the horse ran away. Robert got in his jeep. He caught up with the horse. He threw a lasso onto the horse. He got lassoed him but, the horse bit the rope. you Could hear the hoarse breath it was like a bull wanting  to charge a person.

The jeep started to run out of gas so it slowed down. Suddenly two deer popped out behind some bushes the deer pushed the car. The deer were strong

Robert said, “ Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.” the rocks were sharp. One wheel went pop! the car went creeeeeeeeeeek. Spash! the car went into the water. he saw two fish jump out of the water one of them slapped him.

Robert said, ”Come back.”  he threw a rock at a fish and he missed.

Robert took his phone and dialed 911 ring ring ring the phone went, ”Hello what’s the emergency,” said the police station

Robert said,” I’m in the water on my car can you guys help me please! and I got attack by a fish. I’m also in the Columbia river the.

the Station said,” calm down I’m going to call the ranger.” Ring Ring Ring

            ”hello.” said the ranger
“A person is in the Columbia river you’ve got to save him before he drowns.” said the situation

The ranger said, ”ok.” So the ranger drove to the river. He said,” here let me get out of my truck and get ready.”

Robert said,” for what do I get ready for?”

The ranger tossed a rope “Oh.” said  Robert.  The ranger pulled Robert out of the icy cold water Robert said,” thank you very much.”

“no problem,” said the ranger but the bad part is that, Robert never got to sell that horse.-The End
