Homework for the week/ Update from Ms. Luria

Here is a link to this week's homework: Homework

Dear Families,

Valentine's Day -  We could use some volunteers. Please sign up here to help out at our party on the 13th: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f4bafaa2ba5fb6-valentines

Students may exchange cards on Valentine's day. I encourage students to make hand-made cards and not use store bought cards. This will be the homework assignment for the week leading up to Valentine's Day. Either way, please know that we will exchange cards, but NOT treats! (26 kids each handing out candy to 26 kids = a ton of sugar!)

Oregon Battle of the Book's Schedule: Parents are welcome to come and attend. Most of the battles will be held in my room. I will update with times as soon as I found them out!

Thursday Feb 5:  LURIA & CHUN Team 2 (THE READERS) vs  Team 4 (BLOOMING PEARLS)

LURIA & BENNETT Team 3 (LURIA -Team 4) vs Team 18 (Bennett  - Saskia, Layla, Sentori & Una)

Friday Feb 6: LURIA & BENNETT Team 1 (MOONSTONE) vs Team 17 (THE SOCIALS)

Reading/History -We continue to learn about food and where food is from. Students wrote opinion pieces this week about a favorite food and why it is the best food. We also learned about foods that are traditionally eaten for New Years celebrations around the world and how food is prepared to be eaten in space.

Math -Started our lessons on fractions this week. Fractions are an exciting unit. Students were introduced to the idea of equivalent fractions in drawings. We also talked about how the bigger the denominator of a fraction is, the smaller the actual slice of the fraction is. This is a confusing concept for many children.
You could support learning with fractions at home through cooking. Ask your child things like:
  • If I am missing my 1 cup measuring cup, how many 1/3 cups do I need?
  • Would I need more or fewer cups if I use the 1/4 cup?
  • How many 1/4 cups fill up the 1/2 measuring cup?
  • If I wanted to double this recipe, and it calls for 2/3 of a cup of flour, how many cups do I need now?

Have a wonderful long weekend!

Jesus

My favorite food is churros because churros are sugary. Some people put something insde of it to make it taste better. Every time I see my sister play soccar there's a truck that sells some churros. Churros are kind of shaped like a tube. My mom said that Churros are from Mexico. CHurros are the best thing I've tried.

Dear Families,

Valentine's Day Students may exchange cards on Valentine's day. I encourage students to make hand-made cards and not use store bought cards. This will be the homework assignment for the week leading up to Valentine's Day. Either way, please know that we will exchange cards, but NOT treats! (26 kids each handing out candy to 26 kids = a ton of sugar!)

Reading/History -We continue to learn about food and where food is from. This week we learned about the history of tea, wedding cakes, and birthday foods. Students also chose a specific ingredient to do a research project on such as the history of tomatoes. Students learned about where the food originally was discovered and how it is now used in different parts of the world.

Math -We are learning all about area this week. You child should be able to find the area of rectangles and the perimeter of rectangles. Your child should also be able to look at a complex shape and break it down into smaller shapes. Here are some five minute video to give you an idea of what your child should be able to do this time of the year with area: https://learnzillion.com/lessonsets/755

Science -We learned all about mixtures this week! What makes a mixture different from a solution? What happens when you mix different liquids and solids? Can your child give you an example of a solution and a mixture that you see in real life?

Have a wonderful weekend!

Dear Families,

The students have been working very hard for the MLK day performance. Thank you for coming and supporting us at the performance!

History - We have read many books on the Civil Rights movement and talked about what IB attitudes different leaders demonstrated. Students also talked about what IB attitudes are easier and harder for them. I encourage you to talk more with your child at home. What does social justice mean? What are civil rights?

Math - We are finishing up our unit on multiplication and division. At this point, your child should understand how to solve word problems including multiplication and division that are single digit by single digit. This next week we will be learning about area. Our next unit will be all about fractions!

Reading/Writing - For our IB unit, we are reading about food from all over the world. Students are investigating the history of a specific food and will be writing a report on that food in the upcoming weeks.

Have a wonderful weekend!
