Update from Ms. Luria 5/31/2013

May 31, 2011

Dear Families,

Calendar:
June 3: All library books due
June 4: Final P.B.I.S. assembly 2:15 in the auditorium
June 5: Rose Parade 3rd grade only
June 7: Field Day in the afternoon (contact Ms. Timms if you are available to help)
June 12: Talent Show – 1pm
June 13: Jet Boats (3rd grade only)
June 14: Last day of school for students

(3rd grade only) On Parade Day, please send a lunch in a totally disposable container as we have no way to transport lunchboxes back.

Also please remember you need to pick your child up or have made arrangements to have them picked up at the flagpole at Grant High School at about 2:00 on parade day. We are marching group number 49 in the parade.

Homework: There is no homework this week.

Reading: Students are continuing to read their own books and keep a response journal during reading. We are also continuing our read out loud.

If you child is wondering about what book to read next, I recommend using this website: http://www.whatshouldireadnext.com/ You can type in the name of a book that your child enjoys and then find other books that might also be of interest.

Science: This week we learned more about seed germination. Students discovered that sometimes old seeds, past their expiration date, do not germinate. They also worked on planting a pumpkin patch in the garden for next year.

For animal life cycles, we studied the life cycle of frogs. Students learned about the four stages of a frog’s life cycle and wrote about their learnings.

Writing: The imaginative writings were wonderful! Keep an eye on the blog for the next few days. I’ll be posting the stories as soon as they are typed. Students are also working on poems for spring. They used dictionaries to find interesting words about spring and are finishing up their final drafts this week!

In the last week of school, we will be creating a writing portfolio for each student to take home. This will have many of the essays and stories they have worked on throughout the year.
