    Last Friday my class went on a field trip to the Willamette Jet Boats. We got there by taking two TriMet buses. The first bus was empty except for one person, but the second bus was way too crowded! The whole journey took a really long time and was quite boring.

     Once we arrived at OMSI everyone pulled out their sack lunches and started eating. Once we finished, we walked down to the dock. Once we got down to the dock, I met my mom there. She gave me my rain gear, pants and coat.  Just as Ms. Hunt’s class (another third grade class) got out of the boat, it started raining. 

     Once we got on the jet boat we got our life jackets on.  Kory, the driver, liked to get us soaking wet! Every time we passed a bridge, Kory would tell us the name of it and a few facts about it. The way he got us wet was by going fast and suddenly putting on the breaks.  We went into a shipyard and saw some amazingly cool ships. 

     One thing I learned was that Oregon’s first airport was on Swan Island! Some of the bridges we saw were the Marquam, Burnside, St. John’s and the Steel. My favorite bridge was the Steel Bridge. My favorite part of the trip was when it started to hail on our way back to OMSI!

Why Volcanoes Erupt

     Long ago there was only one mountain on Earth. There were two beautiful lakes around the mountain. In one of those lakes there were two families of beavers. When they first moved to that lake, they took many trees down from one side. Ten years later they had eaten every single tree around the lake.  They needed to find more trees fast!

     The closest place they found was the mountain. So the next day they set out to find the mountain’s trees. Once they had cut down their first tree, one of the beavers said, “These are the best trees ever!” So they brought back one tree at a time. By the end of the day they had brought back five trees.

     “What are we going to do with all these trees” a baby beaver asked his father. His father replied, “Some of them we can eat and the rest we can use to upgrade our dams.”  “Could we make a dam mansion?” baby beaver asked. “No son that would be too much work for our worker beavers.”

       During the next two months, the beavers went to the mountain daily.  Every day they brought back more trees. The beavers didn’t notice that every time they cut down a tree, the mountain got angry. One day the mountain got so mad it suddenly started to rumble!

     “What was that?” asked Bob the Beaver. “It sounded like the mountain.” Said a worker beaver named Bugs Beaver. “I think the mountain is mad at us for cutting down trees.” said Bob. “He wouldn’t mind if we took one more” Bugs replied.

     So they took one more tree and then the mountain started to rumble again. Then it got so mad it blew its top off. A boiling hot liquid started pouring down the mountain. That is why to this day volcanoes erupt.

I'm an expert on Zelda Twilight Princess. For those of you who don't know what Zelda is, it's a video game. It's really an action adventure puzzle. The goal of the game is to save Hyrule Land. Eventually you have temples you save to beat.

            You character is named Link. The little village you grow up in has houses and a pond. The main weapon you use is a sword. Some weapons you get are claw shot, bow, arrows and bombs. The way you get most weapons is by defeating bosses of temples you solve. Zelda always keeps your mind thinking on a puzzle.

            The first Zelda was created in 1986. Zelda was the first game that you could save your progress on. There are at least 17 Zelda games. The brand that made Zelda is Nintendo. Zelda is one of the top rated video game series in the world.

            The temples you have to beat are: Forest temple, Goron mines, Lakebed temple and Arbiters grounds. Those are the first four temples, there are nine in all. Each temple has its own theme. For example the Lakebed temple has the theme of water. It makes sense that it's a water temple because it's at the bottom of a lake.

            At the moment they are creating a new Zelda. They say it's going to have a lot more space to explore. They say it might be multiplayer. It's going to be a mix in between different already created Zelda's. My goal is to save up enough money to buy will and play the new Zelda!

My Recipe:

2T garlic (minced) 4t olive oil 28 oz can italian tomatoes 1t salt ¼t black pepper ¼t dried oregano ¼t crushed  red pepper flakes ½ cup pitted chopped kalamata olives 2T rinsed salt packed capers

Method: In large skillet, cook garlic in olive oil over medium heat.  Before garlic burns, add tomatoes with juices, using spoons to break up the tomatoes.  Add the salt, pepper, oregano, red pepper flakes, capers and olives.  Stir to combine. Turn heat to low and simmer for 1-2 hours, stirring and scraping the bottom of the pan to make a thick, flavorful sauce (about 2 ½ cups).  Cook one pound of pasta per instructions, wider noodles work better.  Serve sauce on noodles with freshly grated parmesan.

Who is my mentor and what did I learn from my mentor?

My mentor is my Dad. My dad is ¼ Italian. He taught me how to make the sauce and the history of pasta in Italy. I also learned where the ingredients are grown, from him.  It’s not an old family recipe, however one day it will be!

The food I studied is pasta with tomato sauce and Parmesan cheese.

The history of pasta:  Some people think pasta came to Italy from China, but noodles date back to Greek and Roman times.  Back then, pasta was called lagane which also has the same root as the word lasagna. Pasta was forgotten until Italian explorer, Marco Polo, rediscovered it in China and brought it back to Italy in 1295. In the 1300’s, pasta was a staple on ships because of a long shelf life and high nutritional values.  Pasta didn’t meet tomatoes until the nineteenth century. 

Pasta is made of durum wheat.  There’s a lot of pasta in Italy because the climate is perfect for growing durum wheat. 

Pasta is used in several types of cooking.  One dish pasta is used in is lasagna.  Another food that pasta is used in is soup.  Mac and cheese, my favorite, is another example.

My first time skiing I thought it was going to be easy. On my first time I fell a lot. It was more tricky than I thought it would be. In the videos I watched it looked a lot easier.

            

After my second time, I was a lot better at skiing. With more and more practice, I got a lot more skillful. The mountains I go to are Mt. Bachelor and Mt. Hood. The reason I love skiing is because I like going fast!

       Leon McCarthy has a colorful new prosthetic hand.  his Dad made the hand from the new 3-D printer at Leon’s school.  With his new hand he can grab more than one object.  His Dad only spent $10.00 on parts for the new hand.  Leon’s science teacher helped out on making the hand.  

            If I had a 3-D printer, I would print Nerf guns.  I would make at least a hundred Nerf guns.  My favorite thing to do with Nerf guns is target practice.  I also like to have Nerf gun fights with my friends.  The reason I would make Nerf guns is they are expensive to buy.

“Oil Spills”

    I am studying oil spills. If there’s an oil spill the oil will get stuck in a fishes’ gills. If one fish eats the fish with oil in its gills it will die too. Oil spills also affect humans.

    Oil spills are also a problem for us because we eat fish. Most of the time you just get really sick, but if you have a lot of oil you could die. One way oil spills happen is if you’re shipping oil across the ocean. If the boat sinks, or gets caught on fire all the oil would spill out. That is when it kills all of the animals and plants.

    Any animal or plant can get sick or killed by oil. If a bird went into the oily water to catch a fish it could die, because it would wear off the waterproof oil on the feathers. It would also freeze the bird to death. It can also kill plants like seaweed and plankton.

    Cars need oil because gasoline is made from oil. That's one reason cars are bad for the environment. My action plan is to not use cars as often. I am going to start this plan today, after I do this it will help because if my family doesn't drive we won't use so much oil.

Have you ever wished that you had a budget? Having a budget makes you save money up but you can still buy things while you’re saving.

            Like say you earned 10 dollars per week you could spend half of that and the other half you could save. It would be slower process but you could still save money. You should also list how much money you make per week.

            When you go somewhere you should bring a notepad. That way you know how much money you spend and how much more you have in your budget. You could also use three jars. One is for donating, one for savings and the last one for spending. Divide your money into each jar. You should always keep your money in a safe place like in a closet or maybe in the bank. The best place is a bank because you get interest. If you had a thousand dollars in the bank and if it was in there for a year it would be 1000 plus 50 dollars.

“Shepherd’s Pie”

Ingredients:

• 1 tbsp olive oil
• 8 potatoes
• 1lb of ground beef
• 1 large (skipped)
• 5 carrots
• 1 leek
• 2 Tbsp. butter
• 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
• 2 Tbsp. cream cheese
• ¼ cup white cheddar
• 1 bouillon cube
• salt & pepper
• 1 can Guinness Chalfcon

Instructions:

1. Pre-heat oven 350 degrees, peel potatoes cut into quarters, boil potatoes with pinch of salt.
2. Peel and dice onion, peel and dice carrots, slice leek.
3. Heat oil in skillet, add onions and leeks and cook until translucent.
4. Add ground beef, add carrots, beer, Worcester shire. (Skipped) and peas ten (skipped). Bring to boil, reduce heat, simmer for five minutes (skipped) pour contents from skillet (skipped) into (skipped) dish.
5. Strain potatoes on mash with (skipped) cream on butter (skipped) add milk cream from other consistency using a fork evenly spread potatoes over meat as vegetables.
6. Sprinkle shredded cheese top. Place in oven and bake 250 degrees for 30 minutes.

Serve, eat, and enjoy!

My mom likes Shepherd pie because it’s good comfort food. My mom is from England and Shepherd’s Pie originated in Ireland and became a traditional dish all across the British Isles. My mom has her own recipe and sometimes she makes it a different way. My Nana made my mom Shepherd’s Pie when she was a little girl. Now my mom makes it for me.
