Myth: Why do owls have big eyes?

A long time ago lived an owl that had very little eyes. Its name was Spotty and his best
friend was Goldy the fox. “Let’s go hunting together,” said Spotty one day. “Good idea,” said
Goldy. “Come, let’s go to the meadow to find rabbits,” Goldy added. Spotty and Goldy both loved
hunting rabbits together in the meadow.

One night they decided to go see the moon. “It’s the most beautiful thing I have ever
seen,” said Spotty. “I agree,” said Goldy. Another time when they were both watching the moon
again, a storm started to approach.

Spotty said to Goldy, “Don’t go too close to the storm, something bad will happen.”
So they decided not to go. For days and days the storm was there.
One night, they finally said to each other, “I want to see the moon again.”
So they went to see the moon, but it was gone. “Where is the moon?,” asked Goldy.
 “It’s behind the clouds,” explained Spotty.
“What shall we do so we can see the moon?,” asked Goldy.
“Let’s stay here and see
what happens,” said Spotty.
 “Ok,” said Goldy.

So they waited for hours and hours. They fell asleep next to each other when suddenly a lightning bolt fell in Spotty’s eyes. The storm stopped and the sky was blue again.
“Wake up Spotty, wake up,” said Goldy.
“Hello,” said Spotty dreamily. “Look what happened to you,” said Goldy.
“Nothing happened to me,” said Spotty.
 “Yes, your eyes got bigger,” said Goldy.
“Hey, I can see better,” said Spotty,
 “Cool,” said Goldy.
“Let’s go hunting together,” said Spotty.
 “Sure,” said Goldy.
And that’s how owls have big eyes.

Why Does the Sun Set?

          One day there was a very lonely Sun.  He had to work all day and night to keep the earth bright and warm.  He had no friends at all.  At the end of each day he would be very tired.  “This is hard work,”he said as he shook the sweat of his head. 

          Meanwhile down on land was Ocean.  He had no family and was very lonely.  He would talk to himself and say, “I wish I had friends.” Each day he also had had to work all day. He had to let many animals use his water. 

          One day Ocean saw something bright in the sky.  To get the things attention Ocean said “WHATS YOUR NAME?

          The thing replied ‘MY NAME IS SUN.’

          After they met each other they became best friends.  Each night when everybody was asleep Sun would go down to visit Ocean.  They both would tell very interesting stories about what they do.

          Sun would say, “Up in the sky I could see many things below.”

          Ocean would say, “So many things happen in the water, there are so many fish.”  And after that, they were never lonely again.

          Now you know why sun goes down every night.  That’s why the sun sets.  To this day ocean and sun are still best friends.

Once the dirt was very black. Everyone hated how the dirt looked. People would say” I don’t want to live in a world with ugly dirt.”

 Well, almost everyone in the world. You see some people liked the black dirt. They always had arguments about the dirt.

Frog and Raven had arguments also! Frog said “black is ugly!” “No black is a awesome color,” said Raven.

So that is what it is like to have black dirt. Now you also know Frog and Raven. They are enemies between each other.

Everyone had no friends at all. That’s right, NO friends at all! Of course except for their family.

One of their gods got very angry! Very angry for a god! “Oh I am tired of fighting ,”the god said. So he had to do something about it. Lightning struck almost every tree in the world! The trees fell to the ground!

Everyone loved the trees , especially the birds. Everyone cried and cried over the trees. The trees rotted away from tears. The rotted trees went into the ground.” Hey Raven do you like this,” Frog said.

 ”Yes I do Frog” Raven said.

Frog and Raven became best friends! Who knew this would happen! They both learned never to fight again. Everyone there was very happy.  That is why the dirt is brown!

Why Volcanoes Erupt

     Long ago there was only one mountain on Earth. There were two beautiful lakes around the mountain. In one of those lakes there were two families of beavers. When they first moved to that lake, they took many trees down from one side. Ten years later they had eaten every single tree around the lake.  They needed to find more trees fast!

     The closest place they found was the mountain. So the next day they set out to find the mountain’s trees. Once they had cut down their first tree, one of the beavers said, “These are the best trees ever!” So they brought back one tree at a time. By the end of the day they had brought back five trees.

     “What are we going to do with all these trees” a baby beaver asked his father. His father replied, “Some of them we can eat and the rest we can use to upgrade our dams.”  “Could we make a dam mansion?” baby beaver asked. “No son that would be too much work for our worker beavers.”

       During the next two months, the beavers went to the mountain daily.  Every day they brought back more trees. The beavers didn’t notice that every time they cut down a tree, the mountain got angry. One day the mountain got so mad it suddenly started to rumble!

     “What was that?” asked Bob the Beaver. “It sounded like the mountain.” Said a worker beaver named Bugs Beaver. “I think the mountain is mad at us for cutting down trees.” said Bob. “He wouldn’t mind if we took one more” Bugs replied.

     So they took one more tree and then the mountain started to rumble again. Then it got so mad it blew its top off. A boiling hot liquid started pouring down the mountain. That is why to this day volcanoes erupt.

WHY OWLS HAVE SUCH BIG EYES

One day there was an owl. The owl’s favorite thing was to perch on a sunny pine branch. Owl liked sunny afternoons. On a sunny afternoon she liked to be on pine branches. Her favorite view was near a big lake where there were lots of big pine trees. Owl’s house was in one of those pine trees by the lake. In her hollow she had a very comfy bed. Sometimes she would stand on a branch and talk to herself. 

Sometimes she would say to herself, “What a wonderful place to be.” One day she was comparing the color of the lake to the sky. She did that every sunny afternoon for three days. 

On the third days she was about to decide when she met a nice chipmunk. Chipmunk and owl immediately became friends. Chipmunk told owl everything about him. This is some of the things he said.

He told owl how he lived in a pine tree just next to owl. He also said his favorite thing to do was sit on big pine trees and look over the lake. 

One day when owl and chipmunk were looking over the lake, chipmunk asked owl, “”Owl, what do you like to eat?” 

Owl said, “I like to eat nuts and berries.” 

Then chipmunk answered “hey, me too” 

A couple of days later owl asked, “do you think that the sky and the lake are the same color?” 

Chipmunk said, “I don’t know.” 

Then owl said, “Lets figure it out.”

First owl looked at the lake. She wondered if the sky and lake were the same color. She thought maybe the lake was darker.

Then own looked at the sky. She meant to just look at the color of the sky, but instead she looked directly at the sun.

Her eyes began to hurt from the bright light. Then they felt like there were burning. Her eyes because bigger and bigger.

Chipmunk looked at owl in surprise. She said, "What happened? Your eyes are huge! They are as big as the lake."

Now you know why owls eyes are so big.

            How crow got his voice    

Once there lived a boy raven and a girl fox. Everyone in the raven’s town said, “She will eat you.” Fox’s dad said, “Eat him and his family!” The couple left so they wouldn’t have hear that nonsense.  

Three years later fox and raven had a baby that was a crow. Raven said, “We don’t want any voiceless babies.” Then fox pushed him into a stone cave that was very dark and said, “Leave him here forever” and they left no one has seen them since.     

   

Something that was unusual about crow was that he didn’t know how to speak. One day he went on a journey to find his family. On the way he passed a valley with pink, yellow, blue, and red flowers. When he got to the forest he saw oak and apple trees. Then he flew up and looked down and saw a fox in a log. He wanted to ask her something but he couldn’t speak! The little fox asked, “What is your name?” Then he tried to say something. Three minuets later crow landed but the little fox ran away. 

Then the little fox turned around and yelled, “You will get eaten up by my dad!” 

Then crow thought, “What for?” He flew away so he could live. Then he noticed that a vine was wrapped around his foot. The father fox was coming! The father fox pulled on the vine. Right then the fox snapped the vine with his sharp teeth. Crow left wondering if the fox let him go on purpose or by accident.

Crow flew five miles and then dropped to the ground because he was tired. Then he looked up and saw a snake! Crow was so startled that he made his first loud noise. The snake hissed, “Ssssstop or I will go deaf and I’m only sssssix years old.” From that day on crow would make that noise. He would try to show everyone that he had a voice.

Why owls’ eyes are big.

         

Long ago the forest was filled with animals, as it is now.  There were no people so the animals roamed free.  The animals were all friends, but some were the best of friends.  Some like raven and crow, frog and turtle, and squirrel and chipmunk. They were all great friends. Though two of them stood out those to were Owl and Fox and so.

          One day Owl was taking a walk with Fox. They started to sing and dance.  “Food is here it’s so yummy there is so much to go around,” sang Owl (“An odd song,” Chipmunk and Squirrel always gabbed between one another.)    “I am hungry,” whispered Fox being sure not to worry his friend.  Fox also said, “I will be right back” and off he went.  No one knew what happened (that is except Fox), but it happened, he left Owl.

          Owl knew that fox would never leave her or so she assured herself.  So when the sun started to slant. The beautifully purplish yellow glow fell on her shiny white and black feathers.  She wasn’t worried it was so pretty it made her feel safe.  (I am going to let you in on a little secret Owl wasn’t that smart so she didn’t know that the sunset lead to dark and she was very scared of the dark).

          Owl realized that Fox had left her and that he was the only one who new the home, she panicked.  He called out, “Fox were are you I don’t know the way home!”

“Over here,” said a voice. Owl followed the voice to a clearing in the woods.  There behind two trees three feet apart was a pile of leaves.  Behind the pile there was fox.  He was the only one who knew why he was doing this. He was hungry and only Owl had the most food. She was out all the time in the day looking for food for fear of looking for it at night in the dark.

          Anyway Fox was very hungry and would love some of Owl’s food for he didn’t know how to hunt.  Fox decided to play a trick on Owl.  Fox tied a rope between the two trees and dug a hole.  He wanted to trap Owl so he could get her food.

“AHHHHH!!!!!!!” screamed Owl as she tripped over rope tied between the two trees and fell into a dark hole.  Fox was sorry, but he was hungry so he went away to eat Owl’s food.

          Owl grew accustom to the dark and began to like it.  As she did her eyes started to grow so she could see in the dark well.

          AND THAT’S WHY OWL’S EYES ARE BIG!

AFTER THE STORY:  Owl was never friends with another fox or any one really, but after two days of being in that hole she began to scream for help and along came frog and turtle.  They said, “We can’t help,” they said together, “but we know who can.” 

“Thank you very much,” said Owl itching her foot while looking up at the sky and realizing all this time she had forgotten about her wings and that she could fly.  “ I think I can get out myself, though,” and off she went soaring high.

          Sometimes if you find a clearing and are quiet you can hear Owl telling her children to watch out for foxes and their tricky ways. Maybe if you are super quiet you can hear Fox still eating all of Owl’s food.  That’s only if your quiet, though.

Narrator: A long time ago, camels did not live in the desert. The camels in the forest had been biting at their fur for day trying to get the bugs out. They pressed their eyes  against the trees looking for bugs. They pulled apart their lips trying to get yucky bug tastes out of their mouths.

Camel one: I’ve been pulling out my fur so much it’s short, I’m cold in this forest!

Camel three: We have all split our hooves on rocks now they hurt when we walk on this hard dirt.

Camel two: I’ve heard the deserts sand is soft and it’s warm there.

Narrator: The next night, camel one closes his eyes...

Camel one: I can still see

Camel two/three: We can too!

Camel two: Are eyelids are clear.

Camel three: This will protect us from sandstorms when we move to the desert.

All: We should move to the desert!

Narrator: So the camels moved to the desert. They soon found that they could travel very far. Their thick lips let them eat cactuses. Their short fur made them not too hot. That is why camels live in the desert.

       Once upon a time there was a swan. He wanted to know why the clouds weren’t puffy. He thought and thought but he couldn’t think why the clouds weren’t puffy. So he went to see Fish. But Fish said, “Clouds can’t become puffy.”  The swan said, “I don’t think that’s true.”

        Then he felt a sting. It was a bee trying to show him something. So the swan flew as high as he could go. He saw the bee trying to do something. He asked the bee, “What are you doing?” The bee answered, “You will see once I am done.”

         The swan noticed something different about the clouds. He saw something puffy sticking out. He went to get Fish. When the swan showed Fish the clouds, he was amazed. He didn’t realize the bees make the clouds swell up from their stingers.
