My bridge report is on the Steel bridge. Some of the facts shown here are from
my own knowledge, and others are from Wikipedia (But not copied from it). The Steel bridge is a vertical lift bridge 24 yards wide.It was completed to replace the old bridge in 1912. The main way it is supported is by a truss system. The lower deck is normally 7 yards above the water. When it’s raised, the lower deck is 24
yards above the water.
The top deck can be lifted 30 yards above the water. The top deck carries cars and the MAX. About 605 MAX trains run on it every day. The Moda Center is sometimes visible from it.
Two of the bridges near it are the Broadway and the Fremont. When we were on the Jetboats, Kory gave us extensive facts on the bridge and also soaked us near it. The weight of all the counterweights added together total 4,100 metric tons(metric ton=very, very heavy).
In conclusion, my favorite bridge out of the 11 that cross the Willamette is the Steel bridge. I hope this essay teaches you about one of the most interesting bridges in Portland.!!!
