Here are the links to the plays. You may add onto and write more in the plays. You are not to delete any section that you see. After you finish your own section, you can add dialogue to another section if you have an idea.

To see what other people have written, you can come back to this page and re-click on the link.

Assignment:

1. Type up what you have written so far
2. Add onto your story if you need to in your own section
3. Read the whole story through
4. Change any misspellings that you see or errors that you see in punctuation
5. Read another group's story or add dialogue to another section of your own story

Dear Families,

Thank you for the wonderful MLK assembly. The students worked hard and were so excited to have you there!

Scholastic Orders: Please bring Scholastic Book orders on Tuesday. I have coupons for a free book for each person who orders $10. I have kept the coupons in the classroom so they don’t get lost! The free book can be worth up to $5.

IB: We are working hard on writing up our myths. If you scroll down on the blog, you can see a link to the actual myths that they are writing. Click on the link to see the writing in action. We are experimenting with using Google documents to collaborate and write together. Students have been learning a lot about how to work together as a team on a big project.

Writing: Around this point in the year, 3^rd graders start being more independent in their writing. We have a mini-lesson at the beginning of each writing time. Then students work for 10 minutes silently, by themselves. For the rest of writing time they can work with a partner, sign up for an adult conference, edit or do many other things. Finally, up to three students get to share their writing at the end of the writing time. Here is a poster of what writing time looks like! 

Math: In calendar we are relating money to fractions. Here is a picture of the calendar. This next week we are working together with Ms. Hunt’s class to do math rotations. Each student will have some time with me and some time with Ms. Hunt as we deepen our understanding of equivalent fractions.

We have finished our unit on geometry. Ask your child to tell you about all of these shapes and show you’re the hand motions that go along with the shapes!

Science: We continue to study the mystery plant and the plant cycle. Everyone is very curious about the plant. Most children now believe that it is a bulb. We are also working on measuring like scientists. The plant has grown to 63 cm, but didn’t grow at all this past week. The flower is starting to open a little bit. Here are some pictures from the process.

Dear Families,

Happy New Year! It is wonderful to see everyone back at school and hear about winter breaks. I hope that you had a restful break.

Thank you so much for your generous gifts. My family has already enjoyed the Podnah's gift certificate you gave me! We had a wonderful meal. I can't wait to go to the plant store and create a new terrarium! Also, I'm enjoying read the plant book. (Especially because I can't do too much gardening this time of the year.)

IB: We continue to read myths about why the world is the way it is. Expect to see more myths on the blog in the next few weeks! We are also going to start working on a plan to present to the third grade.

Math: The new math groups are a bit smaller! We are working on the meaning of multiplication and division. In calendar we are relating money to fractions. Ask your child questions like if I have 2 dimes, what fraction of a dollar is that?

Science: We continue to study the mystery plant and the plant cycle. Everyone is very curious about the plant. Most children now believe that it is a bulb. We are also working on measuring like scientists. The plant has grown to 25 cm over the break!

       Once upon a time there was a swan. He wanted to know why the clouds weren’t puffy. He thought and thought but he couldn’t think why the clouds weren’t puffy. So he went to see Fish. But Fish said, “Clouds can’t become puffy.”  The swan said, “I don’t think that’s true.”

        Then he felt a sting. It was a bee trying to show him something. So the swan flew as high as he could go. He saw the bee trying to do something. He asked the bee, “What are you doing?” The bee answered, “You will see once I am done.”

         The swan noticed something different about the clouds. He saw something puffy sticking out. He went to get Fish. When the swan showed Fish the clouds, he was amazed. He didn’t realize the bees make the clouds swell up from their stingers.

Dear Families,

Students had a full week. We are into our 3rd IB unit of the year. Students are writing myths to answer questions about the northwest. Some of their questions are the following:

• Why are clouds puffy?
• Why is the ocean salty?
• Why is the sky blue?
• Why does the crow make the sound it makes?

We are reading traditional myths from Northwest cultures and writing our own myths in similar styles. 

HW: This week students are to finish writing the myth they have started in the classroom.

Friday Sing: You, and your family, are invited to our last Friday sing. We will be singing winter songs, rounds and other songs that we have been learning this year in the classroom. Come and sing along with us before the winter holiday starts. Join us at 2:00 pm for about 30 minutes of singing. Then, feel free to stay and share some treats before the end of the day. 

Headphones: Please have your child bring a baggie with a pair of headphones to use in the classroom.

Math: We are close to our goal of 100% of the students reaching mastery of subtraction! I anticipate that we will be having a math party before the end of January. Your children are working hard on mastering the basics! We also will continue our study of geometry for one more week. Our next unit will be on multiplication and word problems.

Spelling: No spelling test next week.

Dear Families,

Students had a full week. We started our next IB project on how people and the world are connected. Students have been asking questions about why the world is the way it is. Ask your child about their questions about the world.

HW: This weekend students are to work on their individual homework packet.

Battle of the Book: Students all have their own teams. They are reading books and excited about the process. This is part of the homework this week.  

Headphones: Please have your child bring a baggie with a pair of headphones to use in the classroom.

Math: We are learning all about quadrilaterals and geometry. The words are challenging for many students. Instead of a spelling test next week, students will have a vocabulary test on the math words!
