“My first time ice skating”
When I woke up in the morning I was quite awake; I was not that hungry at breakfast. I was ice skating for the first time, I thought I was going to get hurt, I thought I was going to break an arm.
It appeared I was good at it. My nanny helped me put on the skates. I went through the middle, I was at Lloyd center. When I got home I was relieved to be home.

My first time going roller skating, I went with my cousins and sister. I got new skates bought it because my grandma bought them for me. I got on my roller skates and went on the rink. I skated near the wall so I wouldn’t fall.
I skated around the rink and all Jay and Lexi were skating in the middle. I felt bad because I couldn’t skate with them. It is not that easy to skate when you are trying to learn to skate.

Max

When ice skated for the first time I was 3 years old. I felt very sleepy when I woke up. When me and my family went to Lloyd center, I felt (skipped). Me on by myself improved 55% ice skating in 2 ½ hours. When I went home I had a good memory doing a good job skating.
My sister Dona was 12 years old at the time I ice skated. Dona was a very good ice skater, since Dona was so good I’d give her a 20 a skating. Me, dad, sister and mom came with me on my first lap, I said to myself I will not give up today! And a few minutes later I got the hands of skating and I remember the time I was good at that sport!

Eleanor

I was going to ice skating with my cousin Lucy. The tightness of the ice skates wasn’t bothering me when I stepped on to the rink. Once me and Lucy got to the first corner we were kicked off the rink. They were putting new ice on. The zambotani drove onto the rink. I put water on and the water froze.
Once we were let back on the rink the ice was more slippery. After a while Lucy’s father, Nick took us out to the middle, He challenged us on things like skate to the red circle and back. Soon we realized we could skate without the wall. I was really proud when I walked off the rink.

Cory

When I woke up this morning I was excited to go ice skating, I thought I was going to be good at it, but I wasn’t that good at it. When I got in the ice skating ring I felt scared. My heart started beating really fast, but then I tried to do it. After a little practice I got better at skating.
On my first day of school I felt scared that I wouldn’t make one friend, but I did make some friends. When I got to school I felt scared. My heart started beating really fast, but I had a good day of school.

It was my first time flying in an airplane. My godmother came too, we got on the plane. It started to move and I screamed. I was sitting by two girls that were going to a wedding. They were nice and they talked to me.
When I was flying I bought a lot of stuff. I bought: a Coca cola, gold fish, crackers, gummy bears, and a Sprite. Finally we were there in New Orleans. I was so happy to get off the plane.

“My first day going to the doctor”
When I went to the doctor, I was so scared. I wanted to go home, but when I got to the doctor and got in. My mom and my dad told me to not be scared, but then my head hurts. My dad tells me that when you are scared, then I’ll tell him my head hurts.
Then the doctor gets a needle and gets it in my hand. Then my heart starts to go faster. It felt like a mouse in a motorcycle, but then the doctor stopped and I said what happened; Then  the doctor said we are done, then I said I am free.

Lexi

Then my mom got a call from my doctor I was scared. He said, “ Lexi has to get a flu shot.” The next day my mom and I went to the doctor. My heart was beating as fast as an elephant stomping.
When my doctor called my name I knew It was my turn. When the needle went in my skin it hurt but before I knew it it was over. I’m still afraid of flu shots.

On my first day of first grade. I felt nervous and sick. When I got to school I had the jitters. My teacher was Ms, Hunt, she was my sisters teacher in third grade. When it was almost the end of the day we had P.E. we played capture the flag, we also played soccer. It was awesome! Then we got to do math, I was dismissed. Overall it was a good first day of school.

Olivia

The first time I learned how to sew was at my grandma’s house. I was excited because I wanted to know how to sew. My grandma let me add on to a towel, she doesn’t use.
She showed me a few different ways that you can sew. I enjoyed learning how to sew. I used a needle and thread to add on, I don’t know how to sew something from scratch but I do know how to add on to something. My grandma helped me at first but after a little practice, I could do it on my own.

“My first day of school”
On my first day of school was in Chicago Illinois. I asked my mom, “what’s a school?”
I asked my mom, “do you stay?”
She said, “we leave for a little while and then pick you up.
“But  then I’ll be lonely.” I said.
“There will be teachers and other kids to play with.” My mom said.
I was a little bit scared. My mom said I made a picture book wiht pictures of our family. I was  even scared  when we were on our way to school. When we walked inside the school, it was a pretty nice place. We checked in and my mom walked me in.
There were already lots of kids in the class. My teachers name was Merlin. After my mom said, “goodbye and have a great day,” I went in with my pictures. When I was looking at my book, two girls came over and said hello. One of the girls got something and said “Do you want to play with this?”
After all I said “yes,” I had fun after all.

“My first time snowboarding”
One day my Dad Lee was driving my mom and I up to Mount Hood. For me to go snowboarding. First we rented a snowboard and then I clipped my boots on to it. The first time I went down the hill I fell over sideways.
The second time I didn’t fall over now that I had gotten better. On the last try I had tumbled down the hill! Then we drove home, It was a one or two hour drive back. It was dark and it was still snowing out. I saw lots of trees, It was a fun trip!

“My first soccer game”
“Go get your jersey and your other gear on for the game,” dad yells.
I’m all ready doing that,” I lied. It was Sunday; I was just about to go to my first soccer game against another team. Just then mom walked into the house.
“How’s my little soccer player?” She asked.
Like I was going to answer that. So instead I said, “Oh, mom I didn’t hear you walk in.” The worlds just rushed out of my mouth before I could stop them.
Then I muttered to my dad, “Of course  I heard her walk in she is always stomping around every place she goes.” He laughed silently but just had to laugh out loud. Mom heard but ignored us.
About 20 minutes later. I was slumping out to the car. My heart was pounding like I was running in the Olympics. It was happening, my first soccer game! When we got to Fernhill (my teams home field) my coach was waiting for us and everybody else to arrive. Then we got in a group and made sure our cleats were tied. We didn’t have any hair things besides headbands and hair ties, we had our shin guards on, and our shorts. I love my teammates, my coach and referee, they really encourage me but I was still scared. We lined up and the whistle blew, before I knew it my teammates (including me) were running around scoring goals. I didn’t score any goals but it was still fun, and since it was fun we weren’t  thinking so we won the game. It was the first time fell down but my teammate tripped over me. Oh, and I didn’t say the name of the team. It’s Galaxy Girls. I scored two goals three games later. I was so happy and proud. If you play soccer you know how it feels.

My alarm rang but I was already awake. It was going to be the first time I went to Enchanted forest and I was full of excitement. In the afternoon my cousin Eliyes came over, we had lunch and we were off to Enchanted forest.
When we got there we had to go through a castle. The castle was blue sign that said, “don’t feed the dragons matches”. Then we got to the rides, the first one we went on was the Bob sled. We went into a mountain, there was a troll there. When we did all the  lids it was time to go. I couldn’t wait to come back!

“The first time I went underwater”
The first time I was underwater, I decided that I was scared out of my skin. My heart was competing with my stomach for which would got to jump into my throat first. Then I popped up and thought it was awesome until my nose got filled up with water. So I decided to do it again, the same feeling struck my central nerve system.
My brain told my body to rise, but my body disagreed; so  I stayed under even though my lungs burned. Finally, I couldn’t take it, I rose to the surface. I grinned and asked if we could stay longer.

Alma

When we parked our car, I was nervous. Today was my first day of ski school. I walked into the ski lodge, there was so many people. My mom and dad came with me, when we were going out of the ski lodge it was hard to walk in my ski boots because the front of my boot was higher than the back.
The first thing I learned was how to stop, the second thing I learned was how to to turn, and the third thing I learned was how to ride the lift chairs. At 11:30 we went to the ski lodge to have lunch; I got pizza and root beer.
My favorite part was the last run down the bunny hill, we got to do whatever we wanted on the last run.

“Dancing on the stage for the first time”
My first day of the show, my mom dropped me off so I could put on my costume before it started. Now it was my groups’ turn, I had a partner, we went on the stage. I felt my heart began thumping.
I danced and I felt the joy of music in my head. Everyone was quiet so it made me think of what was the surprise. My partner was my friend Ellegra so it made me more comfortable.
Then I look at what was doing my teacher, so the dance would look good. After the first dance we went to the back stage so we could change for our next dance.
The next dance was easier; it was the Mexican dance, the last dance. I felt calm, but when I got on stage my hat fell off, I was so scared that I could hear my heart thumping. I acted calm so that everybody would think it was meant to.
Finally I put my hat on and danced. When it was over, on of the teachers told me that you did well. I was happy after all. The surprise to celebrate was a drink but a good one.

Ella

When I got my dress on, and the grownups stopped talking, I got so nervous. My head was pounding with excitement. I went into my living room. What song was I supposed to sing? Oh no, I forgot the song!
I just stopped and sat there looking around at people. Finally my dad announced the song, so I remembered the song and began to sing. Then the song was over and people were clapping and cheering for me. My family was so proud of me, I was also proud.
I was so proud of myself after the song was all over. So from that day I wanted to be a singer.

Great resource for fun math books

Many of these books are available at the library! I encourage you to check out these math books that go along with the new Bridges Curriculum for math.

http://www.mathlearningcenter.org/resources/blog/category/childrens-literature

One of my favorite books is called The Best of Times. Here is a link to the book from Powells: http://www.powells.com/biblio/1-9780439210447-9.

The books teaches strategies for learning multiplication. Each strategy has a fun poem to help children understand and remember the strategy. Most of these strategies we use as part of the Bridges curriculum in the classroom.

Here is a sample strategy:

Four is very fast to do when you multiply by 2.
Here's a little good advice --
please just always double twice!

Enjoy the poems and the books.
